EXHIBITION NEWS

Northeast Regional Juried Contemporary Fiber Exhibition Opening in Rochester, NY, Friday, April 1

 

The Northeast Juried Contemporary Fiber Exhibition at Rochester Contemporary Art Center, 137 East Avenue, Rochester, NY, presents 28 works by 22 artists that expand the definition of fiber art.

Dates: April 1 – May 9, 2011

Opening Reception: April 1, 6- 10 PM

Artists’ Reception: May 6, 6-10 PM

The participating SDA artists from NYS are: Marilyn Henrion, Tracy Jamar, Elaine Longtemps, Carol Ann Rice Rafferty, Elena Shandalow/Dana Connell, Betty Vera and Vivien Zepf.

Fiberart International also opens at the Memorial Art Gallery on May 1, so if you are interested in visiting both venues, you’ll want to time a visit to Rochester between May 1 – 9 and enjoy two intriguing exhibitions of contemporary fiber.

Deborah Bein’s piece, “You’re Fracking Killing Me”  has been selected for the Fiber Plus juried exhibition at the Blue Door Gallery, 13 Riverdale Avenue, Yonkers, NY.

Overabundance of Detail focuses on artists who create intricate aesthetic experiences by focusing on minute variations and fluctuations in content and form. A commitment to detail borders on obsession in some works; while in others, it reveals to us the unique nature of the objects presented. Large-scale pieces can entice from afar with rich patterns, examined closely they reveal precision. Smaller works, because of their tooling or architectural reference points, seem monumental. Works as varied as paintings, drawings, metal sculpture, and cake designs will illustrate different artist's use of extreme detail work.

Dates: March 30 - April 29, 2011

Turan’s art represents the vibrancy of shape, line and color that makes up a city.  Steel, stone, concrete and glass designed and engineered at its most functional, abstract and forceful.  Her mixed-media fiber pieces are works in dyes, threads and a variety of other media on whole cloth that give the impressions of the hardness of the city but in the malleable surface of textiles.

New York Fiber in the 21st Century focuses on artists in and near New York City who work primarily in fiber/textile materials or modes, including quilt-making, knitting, crochet, tapestry, weaving, felt making, rug hooking, embroidery, needlepoint, basketry, book arts, and metal work. This exhibition offers a unique survey and features emerging artists beginning to make a name for themselves, as well as mature artists whose work was recognized in the first major wave of New York fiber art in the 60s and 70s. All of the works were produced since 2001, and four artists - Gema Alava,  Lisa Curran, Don Porcella, and Vered Sivan - have created large-scale installations for the exhibition. This survey includes forty-seven works by thirty artists and demonstrates the vibrant diversity of fiber art on the New York scene.

Visiting Manhattan from Vancouver, CA

Ros Aylmer, an SDA member from Vancouver, Canada is traveling to NYC in April with some  textile and Surface Design enthusiasts, and is wondering if our Manhattan based members have any suggestions for them while they’re in town. Their primary focus is on one-of-a-kind clothing design. They will be visiting museums as well as the garment district and as many fashion designers as possible. Pat Pauly

Pat Pauly, “Leap of Faith”, 2011.

Pat Pauly’s "Leap of Faith" has been accepted into "Textiles in a Tube". This juried exhibition of contemporary textiles runs from March 4, 2011 to April 15, 2011 at the RIVERWORKS Gallery, Greenville Technical College’s downtown gallery at Art Crossing on Riverwalk in Greenville, South Carolina. The challenge was to enter works that could be shipped in a 3" x 36" mailing tube. Pat was intrigued with that odd set of rules, and "Leap of Faith" is the result.

-- In this new work, Pat Hickman and Joan Harmon speak to their relationship with the Hudson River, the body of water on whose west bank they both live.

 
In her work Joan Harmon is charting the Hudson through the duel lenses of Google Earth and her daily view of the River. These new drawings combine her fascination with the river’s shape as an abstract form with the ancient art of mapping. 

Pat Hickman is working with what is found beneath the surface. When trees fall into the water, over decades they decay, eventually disappearing into the river bottom. What resists this disintegration are the strange shapes formed where the branch joined the trunk, a cross-grained, pitch hardened core like a tooth in a human head. Hickman is exploring visual metaphors with these river teeth, the last part of the body to let go.

Laurie Wohl, “Peace Like A River”

Peace Like a River" is featured in the current exhibit, "A Stitch in Jewish Time: Provocative Textiles" at the Museum at Hebrew Union College (NYC). Laurie will be speaking about this piece at HUC on March 29. The exhibit runs until June.

K. Velis Turan

K. Velis Turan is one of 16 artists juried into Artists’ Views of Hudson Valley,an exhibition of works that have been inspired by the Hudson Valley’s wineries. The exhibition is part of  “A Year-long Celebration of Art & Wine in the Hudson Valley,” sponsored by Hudson Valley Wine Magazine.

This Celebration “pairs” professional Hudson Valley artists with select Hudson Valley wineries and vineyards. The jury-selected group of artists are creating, in their own chosen medium, a wine- or vineyard-inspired artwork by partnering with a specific Hudson Valley winery. The artists and wineries will be featured throughout the year in various promotions and press events, and will exhibit for the first time at the Grand Art & Wine event on May 21, 2011 in Tarrytown, NY.

The exhibit will then travel to several art galleries located in the Hudson Valley, including “M Gallery” in Catskill, and “Paul Gould Art Gallery” in Cornwall.

Susan’s piece,  “Rose Sabrina”, has been  juried into the "Fiber Plus" exhibition at the Blue Door Gallery  in Yonkers NY.

Susan, who works as a psychotherapist, has also designed BEHOLD, a pendant available for purchase by clicking on this link for the Cedar Associates Foundation.  100% of all proceeds from sales will be donated to the foundation to assist patients who cannot afford to pay for their eating disorder therapy.

The narrative image of “No One Is Listening”, will be displayed in a continuously looping slide show at the exhibition “Green: the Color and the Cause”, at the Textile Museum in Washington, DC, April 16 through September 11, 2011

Guggenheim Museum, for inclusion in the 25th International Juried Show being presented at the Visual Arts Center of New Jersey, January 14 through March 18, 2011. Jeanne Beck’s work will be part of the visual installation “60/20 Virtual Tour: Art in Motion”, presented by the Arena Art Group at Rochester Contemporary Art Center in Rochester, NY for two nights only, January 13, 6-9 PM and January 14, 6 – 10 PM.

The virtual installation celebrates the Art Group’s six decades promoting contemporary fine art and the closing of the Art Center’s 20th member show.

“60/20 Virtual Tour: Art in Motion” will feature multiple projections, video interviews with artists and moving people sculptures in which the audience can become part of the art.

BLUE DOOR GALLERY EXHIBITION DEADLINE EXTENDED TO JANUARY 15

The deadline has been extended to Jan 15th for the national juried exhibition, "Fiber PLUS: 21st Century Fiber with Mixed Media" at Blue Door Gallery, Yonkers, NY.
