Classes in Cheshire, New York

Joan Morris will be in Cheshire, New York, June 22-26, 2012 to teach:

Shibori and Natural Dyes. 

This is a class description for a 5 day class in shaped-resist dyeing using natural dyes, including indigo, woad, a variety of natural dye extracts, madder root, cochineal bugs, and walnut galls.  This class is geared towards students at various levels of experience; from the beginner to those with prior experience and a desire to expand their vocabulary, experiment, sharpen skills and gain greater control of materials.  All levels are welcome in this class.  The beginner can expect to learn 10- 12 forms of shaped-resist (shibori), while they gain knowledge of mordanting with alum, and dyeing with the above mentioned natural dye stuffs.  New to my classes will be the addition of a woad dyebath, a process at once similar to and different from indigo dyeing.  As they are available, new natural dye extracts will be added to the materials we’ll use in class (e.g. coreopsis extract).   Color shifting (with ammonia, vinegar and iron) presents additional color possibilities for each of the dyestuffs we’ll use.  For those with prior experience, bring images of your work, or actual pieces, including work-in-progress, if you would like to engage in a dialog about possible directions that your work could take.  Please note that this is a forum for making samples, experimenting, and making small pieces.  It will not be possible to dye large yardages in this setting.

September 5-7, 2012 Lisa Klakulak will teach a felting class, also in Cheshire New York.

A Naturally Dyed Palette for Surface Design: Patterning and Imagery with Partial Felts

Natural dyeing of wool fleece necessitates a cautious approach, especially working with Merino wool, so that fibers don’t mat in the processes prior to intentional felting.  Experience an alternative technique Klakulak uses to create a broad palette of naturally dyed partial felt for application in surface patterning and image articulation. Learn her strategies for layout, ideal amounts of water and soap and the type of agitation for making quality felt as well as the differences between wet felted partial felt and needle felted pre-felt. After creating partially felted sheets of wool fleece in a gradation of the wool’s natural colors, mordant and over-dye with the most light-fast natural materials and dye extracts: Cochineal, Madder, Weld, Indigo and Walnut. The dyed sheets of felt will then be cut and arranged on a background of loose fleece to create various patterning effects and recognizable imagery that can be applied to the participants future felt projects or fulled and finished for wall display.

Textile Study Group of New York:


The Textile Study Group of New York (TSGNY) is celebrating its 35th Anniversary this year with two member exhibitions on view in NYC.

The first is "Crossing Lines: The Many Faces of Fiber" at the World Financial Center Courtyard Gallery, which has been extended through April 1st. 56 Artists are represented at this show juried by Rebecca Stevens, curator of contemporary textiles at the Textile Museum in Washington DC.

The second is "9x9x3: New Visions" which is at the Durst Building Lobby Gallery, 1155 Ave of the Americas, through March 2nd. This exhibition has been juried by Janet Kaplos, former senior editor at Art in America. This exhibition will be closing soon, so please go check it out!

SDA Member, Elaine Longtemps, has a very large work on display at World Financial Center Courtyard Gallery in the TSGNY Exhibition "Crossing Lines: The Many Faces of Fiber", hosted by Brookfield Properties. Her piece "Extension/Velocity" was selected by Brookfield Properties for their publicity and banners for the show. 


The Courtyard Gallery is located at 200 Vesey Street. The gallery hours are noon to 4:00 daily, except Mondays. The show opened on December 6, 2011, and as mentioned above, has been extended to April 1, 2012.

“Pathways” Showcased at Remsenburg Association Academy’s Summer Art Series 2011

Artist Valerie Zeman presents her textile and fiber art series “Pathways”

Huntington, NY : Valerie Zeman is one of the featured artists represented at the Remsenburg Association Academy of Art – 2011 Summer Art Series. Ms. Zeman invites the community to her Opening Reception on Friday, June 24, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. A Long Island-based artist whose work has been exhibited at different venues on the Island, Ms. Zeman explains, “My color palette reflects my Long Island origins in earth tones of marsh, beach and wood. Juxtaposition of color is one of the true joys of fiber art as canvas. In my designs, I strive for abstract, free-form interpretative expressions of large and small themes, such as “survival” or “family.” Other times, I find that the textile itself and the creative process yield their own results, much like sculpting.”

Ms. Zeman works with textiles and mixed media to produce extraordinarily complex abstract expressionist, multi-layered, fiber art that is technically and visually stunning. She is active in East End art and non-profit organizations, and is a member of the East End Arts Council.

The show runs from June 24th - July 10th, Friday, Saturday, Sunday of each weekend, from 12:00 to 5:00 p.m., during which times Ms. Zeman will be happy to welcome visitors and discuss her work.

The Remsenburg Academy is located at 126 South Country Road, Remsenburg. Known as one of the oldest private academies on Long Island, the Remsenburg Academy building dates to the time of the Civil War and serves as a truly lovely venue for art exhibits, such as the Summer Art Series.

M. Joan Lintault

A PASSION FOR QUILTS: JOAN LINTAULT COLLECTS

View Gallery Quilts collected and made by M. Joan Lintault, one of the pioneering art quilt makers of the 20th century, May 15 – October 30 at the Shelburne Museum, 6000 Shelburne Road, Shelburne, Vermont.

Joan Lintault is an internationally renowned quilter who has been exhibiting her work since 1965 and is represented in the collections of Illinois State Museum, the International Quilt Study Center at the University of Nebraska and numerous public and private collections.
Joan uses a variety of techniques to achieve her visual effect but never relies on commercially patterned fabric, preferring to dye/screen print/paint her own canvas  and then add quilting, appliqué and embroidery to create movement and depth. The Other Messengers,  dating from 1995, is a tribute to fall—her favorite season. The leaves are joined with insects to create positive and negative spaces. The subconscious inspiration for this innovative design was born over thirty years earlier, when Joan made a sketch for an art class featuring the same elements.
The Other Messengers has been exhibited over a dozen times in the United States, France, Austria and Tokyo.
The Museum recently acquired The Other Messengers along with a group of quilts from the 19th and 20th centuries from America and India that represent a lifetime of collecting and influenced her work.

Marcia DeCamp

Marcia has three pieces in the juried all-media show, Images 2011, which is part of the Central PA Festival of the Arts at Penn State University, open until July 17. One of the pieces, “Storm Clouds at Sunrise,” won an Award of Merit.   Follow this link to see the images of the work in this show.

Marcia De Camp, Jet Trails #10

Marcia De Camp’s Jet Trails #10, is one of 60 works that will be published in Sandra Sider’s  forthcoming book, The Studio Quilt, # 6: State of the Art.

The ArT-QuILT ExPERIENCE  

The ArT-QuILT ExPERIENCE, an international juried art-quilt exhibition, opened on June 12 in Cazenovia, New York. Eleven countries are represented in the entries, and there are over 15 SDA members' work in the show.  Twenty of the exhibiting artists joined the crowd of 150+ attendees for the grand opening of the competitively chosen quilts at the Stone Quarry Hill Art Park and the Cazenovia College Art Gallery.

In addition, the Cazenovia Public Library is hosting a show of small quilts
by the Rochester Area Fiber Artists, and the New Woodstock Free Library is displaying quilts created by the TAQE team – Pat Berardi, Julie Brandon (SDA), Val Schultz (SDA), Barb Seils (SDA), and Bonnie Robinson.

Class Description:
Learn the color principles of Bauhaus Masters including Albers, Klee and Itten.  This color workshop will be one of personal and creative discovery rather than just theory.  This 6-part hands-on workshop will explore a series of exercises using screen printed colored papers and collage techniques.  Participants will learn the dynamics and interaction of colors and how to see color with a different awareness. For fiber artists and color lovers – no prior experience necessary.  Any skill level, love of color is the requirement.  How to use color is the practical application. Materials list upon request.
Biography:
Barbara Arlen studied color theory and painting with John Opper (a student of Josef Albers) at NYU.  She facilitates the Color Certificate at the Fashion Institute of Technology’s Center for Professional Studies and teaches several color courses and workshops.  She is a global home fashion design consultant for textiles, new products and sourcing.  Barbara has consulted for long periods in India, Korea and China, both commercially and with artisans.

Pat Pauly's work "Pink Leaf 2" is now on view in Athens, Ohio in Quilt National 2011. The 17th biennial juried exhibition of contemporary art quilts will be on view at the Dairy Barn Arts Center May 28 through September 5, 2011. Over 1,000 entries were whittled down to the final 86, and Pat is thrilled to be part of this prestigious collection. The exhibit will tour starting in the Fall of 2011.

Sum of the Parts: Art Quilts of Pat Pauly

Pat Pauly will have a solo exhibition at the Nazareth College Arts Center
Gallery in Rochester, New York, June 30, 2011 – August 14, 2011. There
will be an opening reception  Friday, July 1, 2011 6 – 8 p.m.

Entitled “Sum of the Parts: Art Quilts of Pat Pauly,” the show will
feature Pauly’s latest work in surface design and textile technique. An
award-winning and nationally-known fiber artist, Pat Pauly uses personal
imagery and freeform surface design in her modern take on a traditional
art form. Bold, graphic and non-literal narrative is the subject matter.
Commercial and artist-designed textiles are the medium intricately
assembled to emerge as the finished fiber work.

The exhibition will be free and open to the public during gallery hours

Nineteen fiber artists embrace the concept of parallax view, where an
object or idea is seen from two different perspectives. From Kathleen
Loomis representation of two sides of the American Civil War, to Dorothy
Caldwell’s “An Island/A Pond,” where dichotomic views of Lake Ontario
serve as the imagery, this exhibition proves that textile art is a
compelling, complex and expressive medium. Many works have never been

SDA Grant Winner Laurie Wohl

Congratulations to Laurie Wohl , who has been awarded an SDA Personal Development Grant. As part of her grant proposal, Laurie wrote:

" I plan to create and to exhibit, in interfaith venues, a distinctive body of Unweavings®. These fiber art pieces – using unwoven canvas, textured papers, and other materials as a foundation – will serve as my medium for integrating visual and tactile elements with texts of interwoven Muslim and Jewish spiritual and secular poetry, using Arabic and Hebrew calligraphy. The calligraphy and my own iconography – raised from the surface of the textile - will serve as both conveyors of meaning and part of the abstract patterning of each piece. In addition to combining Arabic and Hebrew calligraphy, this new body of work will also reference, in form and materials, the iconography of the veil."

CLASS OPENING

The Eastern Great Lakes Fiber Conference (EGLFC) October 7-10, 2011 in Chatauqua NY will include a two day class on  Bogolanfini (Mudcloth) Modified, led by Judy Dominic.

The strikingly simple white design on black background cloth represents the serious artistic manner of telling the stories of village life in Mali, Africa. Learn about the traditional practice of bogolanfini, dyeing cotton cloth with mud, as well as how that process is modified two different ways in the Dominic version. During the workshop you will have the opportunity to create your own story designs using local muds on cotton and other natural fiber cloth. Connect with the earth - literally! - and gain an appreciation of the Mali culture. All level dyers are welcome.

Kris has two works in the Adirondack Region Textile Artists Alliance, ARTAA at Tannery Pond in North Creek, NY.
 

Show Dates: April 30 – May 25, 2011

Reception: Saturday, May 14, 2011, 5-7 PM.

ARTAA is a group of twenty textile artists who came together in 2005 to promote the concept that works of fine art may be created with textiles. Our premier show was mounted at Tannery Pond in April of 2006. We have since shown each year at the Adirondack Museum’s Fiber and Fabric Festival, as the invitational group at the Arts Center in Old Forge, at the Guilderland Public Library, at the Wings Falls Quilt Guild’s Spring Festival, and at the Spring Street Gallery in Saratoga Springs. Our members have won national prizes, mounted solo art shows and exhibited both nationally and internationally. 

ARTAA’s signature element of display is their unique approach to use of materials and techniques and a willingness to venture forward into both two and three-dimensional art forms. Specific to Tannery Pond’s exhibit will be “Inspired by Degas”, a collection of pieces first produced for a show in conjunction with the Season of Degas and his Music, promoted by the Hyde Museum in Glens Falls during the summer of 2009. 

In addition the group will be exhibiting, “Road Kill”, in which textile pieces must contain or reference an item found on or alongside a road.

Artists Reception for Contemporary Fiber in Rochester

 

The First Friday Artists Reception for the Contemporary Fiber exhibition, sponsored by SDA in conjunction with Rochester Contemporary Art Center, will be Friday, May 6, 6- 10 PM. Some of the 22 SDA artist members who were selected from the over 100 applicants from nine northeast US states will be attending. If you are in the area or want to see the fine work on display from these SDA members, please attend. This artist reception is the same weekend that Fiberart International opens at the Memorial Art Gallery (see notice below).

Fiber Design Program – Runway 4.0 & Display Sneak Preview

Deconstructed Screen Printing technique covered various methods from predictable to unpredictable and beyond. Experimenting with deconstructed printing, photo emulsion and stencils gave the students a wide range of possibilities. Using thickened dyes, textile paint and a wax resist on different materials allowed the students to explore mark making and textures in 2D as well as in 3D forms. Experimenting was a big part of the process and the variations were endless. Exploring different ranges of techniques such as felting, embroidery, shibori, appliqué, papermaking and mixed media was an exciting part of the creative process. Other new techniques featured at the Runway 4.0 were Nuno felting in combination with Deconstructed Screen Printing. 

Our main focus for Runway 4.0 was on creating new patterns, yardage on silk, rayon and cotton – for actual garments as well as for wall hanging artworks at our stationary display. Diversity Mash was in our case also a celebration of different vintage textile materials, found objects, combined together in a search for a final form/transformation of those reclaimed/recycled pieces. Part of the wearable art collection is also included in a special Fiber Design Wearable Art category of the fashion show.

Northeast Regional Juried Contemporary Fiber Exhibition Opening in Rochester, NY, Friday, April 1

 

The Northeast Juried Contemporary Fiber Exhibition at Rochester Contemporary Art Center, 137 East Avenue, Rochester, NY, presents 28 works by 22 artists that expand the definition of fiber art.

Dates: April 1 – May 9, 2011

Opening Reception: April 1, 6- 10 PM

Artists’ Reception: May 6, 6-10 PM

The participating SDA artists from NYS are: Marilyn Henrion, Tracy Jamar, Elaine Longtemps, Carol Ann Rice Rafferty, Elena Shandalow/Dana Connell, Betty Vera and Vivien Zepf.

Fiberart International also opens at the Memorial Art Gallery on May 1, so if you are interested in visiting both venues, you’ll want to time a visit to Rochester between May 1 – 9 and enjoy two intriguing exhibitions of contemporary fiber.

Overabundance of Detail focuses on artists who create intricate aesthetic experiences by focusing on minute variations and fluctuations in content and form. A commitment to detail borders on obsession in some works; while in others, it reveals to us the unique nature of the objects presented. Large-scale pieces can entice from afar with rich patterns, examined closely they reveal precision. Smaller works, because of their tooling or architectural reference points, seem monumental. Works as varied as paintings, drawings, metal sculpture, and cake designs will illustrate different artist's use of extreme detail work.

Turan’s art represents the vibrancy of shape, line and color that makes up a city.  Steel, stone, concrete and glass designed and engineered at its most functional, abstract and forceful.  Her mixed-media fiber pieces are works in dyes, threads and a variety of other media on whole cloth that give the impressions of the hardness of the city but in the malleable surface of textiles.

New York Fiber in the 21st Century focuses on artists in and near New York City who work primarily in fiber/textile materials or modes, including quilt-making, knitting, crochet, tapestry, weaving, felt making, rug hooking, embroidery, needlepoint, basketry, book arts, and metal work. This exhibition offers a unique survey and features emerging artists beginning to make a name for themselves, as well as mature artists whose work was recognized in the first major wave of New York fiber art in the 60s and 70s. All of the works were produced since 2001, and four artists - Gema Alava,  Lisa Curran, Don Porcella, and Vered Sivan - have created large-scale installations for the exhibition. This survey includes forty-seven works by thirty artists and demonstrates the vibrant diversity of fiber art on the New York scene.

Ros Aylmer, an SDA member from Vancouver, Canada is traveling to NYC in April with some  textile and Surface Design enthusiasts, and is wondering if our Manhattan based members have any suggestions for them while they’re in town. Their primary focus is on one-of-a-kind clothing design. They will be visiting museums as well as the garment district and as many fashion designers as possible.
