K. Velis Turan

Freehold, NY – The Broderick Fine Art Gallery is please to announce the opening of “Urban Landscapes” a show of  mixed-media fiber art by K. Velis Turan.  It features works motivated by the architecture and life of the contemporary urban environment, especially in New York City.

Velis Turan is moved by shadow, light and color as well as the patterns of nature and man as she “surface designs” her own fabrics. The art in this show is inspired by roads, buildings and bridges. Her techniques include screen printing, dying, painting, stamping, photo transfer, embroidery and beading. The surface of the work may explore all of these options, experimenting and engaging new techniques. She uses a sewing machine to “free-motion” stitch into the surface. Velis Turan says “For me, my pieces are not done until I have added the ‘thread strokes’. No other medium offers the interesting textures and depth as the art- designed, quilted surface.”

Sporer was formerly a chef at the Pierre in Manhattan and chef instructor at New York Restaurant School and the Institute of Culinary Education. Her piece “Torsion” has been included in the national exhibition GALEX 44 in Galesburg, Illinois.
The show takes place at the Galesburg Civic Art Center, 114 East Main Street, from March 13 to April 10.
The opening is on March 13, from 6-8 PM.

SU FIBER ALUMNI INVITATIONAL EXHIBIT

Jappie King Black’s fiber installation now on display at “Elongating the Thread”

SDA members Barbara Jean Weingart, a silk painter and Jappie King Black, who creates fiber installations, have been selected along with six other textile artists for “Elongating the Thread”, an exhibition of works at Syracuse University XL Gallery, 307-313 S. Clinton St., Syracuse, NY,  February 3 – 27, 2010. 

The opening reception is February 18th (Thursday) from 5 to 9. At 5:00 PM several exhibiting artists, including Barbara, will participate in a panel discussion about their work.

ART FROM THE HEART FOR HAITI

Four of Judith Plotner’s fiber collages will be included in “ART FROM THE HEART FOR HAITI”

Each year Mimosa Gallery organizes a group show to benefit a different charity. The past fundraisers have been for the American Cancer Society and Alzheimer's Association of Northeastern New York. 

The 2010 fundraiser will benefit the Clinton Bush Haiti Fund.  A percentage of the exhibition's proceeds will be donated to this organization.

The Clinton-Bush Haiti Fund is working towards providing immediate relief and long-term support to Haiti's earthquake survivors. This fund was chosen because 100% of the proceeds go to the re-building of Haiti.

Introducing New York State’s First Ambassador

New York State SDA has a new ambassador, Gordana Vukovic, who lives in the Albany area. Ambassadors partner with State reps to help design and implement local programs and spread the word about SDA.

Gordana moved to the Capital Region from Arizona several years ago.  Soon after she relocated, her love of color, texture, and patterns led her to take classes with Gail Harker, Ruth Issett, Jane Dunnewold, Kerr Grabowski, Elizabeth Busch and others. Gordana's art is best described as layered mixed media.  She experiments with materials and techniques, and finds beauty in the ordinary.

Gordana is developing a questionnaire that you’ll soon be receiving via e-mail. It’s short, simple and asks, “What would you like to see happening in New York State for SDA members?” Your suggestions and input will be most appreciated.

A Little Mid-Winter Boost

If  winter is starting to wear on you, take a few minutes to watch this video. It’s a nice boost and celebration of the power of creativity, even in the most unlikely places.

 

Prisoners at the Cela Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center in the Philippines choreograph and perform a dance in the prison yard once a month for visiting family and friends. This year they were visited by Michael Jackson's long time choreographer, who spent several hours with them choreographing and filming a routine from "This Is It."

Marilyn Henrion's "Look Again" is included in an exhibition of art quilts from the collection of John Walsh III  that will be at the Morris Museum in Morristown New Jersey from January 13 to April 15, 2010.  You are invited to attend the opening on Wednesday, January 13, at 6:30 PM.

“At the Opening”, a silk painting by Berenice Pliskin will be on exhibit at the Katonah Museum of Art,  134 Jay Street, Katonah NY, from February 28 – June 13, 2010. Pliskin has been chosen as the featured artist of the Katonah Museum Artist Association.

What would increase the benefits of your SDA membership to you personally? We already have excellent national and regional conferences as well as an excellent magazine and newsletter. Those are national/international in scope and attendance. On a local scale, would you be interested in helping to create new programs, events, exhibitions or special interest groups (wax resist, silk painting, knitting, natural dyeing, felting, wearables, textile design for example) right here in New York State?

Felted Art by Naomi Tarantal, Steinhardt Staff Member, on Display

Naomi Tarantal, an administrative secretary in Steinhardt's Department of Music and Performing Arts Professions is among 18 artists whose work

is featured in 'Collective,' a multimedia art exhibit sponsored by the Union of Clerical, Administration & Technical Staff (UCATS) and NYU.

Tarantal is a textile artist who works in the ancient medium of felting, combining wool, silk, and fabric along with found metal to create innovative art pieces, as well as hats, shawls, and jewelry, which appear under the label, 'Sveltefelt.'

In keeping with the art’s nomadic roots, Tarantal has traversed the 'Felt Road,’ traveling to Kyrgyzstan to attend the First International Felt Symposium, and most recently to Petäjävesi, Finland, where she studied and exhibited a shawl at an invitational exhibit.

Her piece, 'Licorice on the Lam,' was part of 'Fiber for the Future,’ an exhibit at the A.I.R. Gallery in Chelsea, New York, juried by Matilda McQuaid of the Cooper-Hewitt Museum.

A graduate of Steinhardt's studio art program (BS, '95), Tarantal is a member of the Textile Study Group of New York. 'Collective,' a collaboration between UCATS and NYU, is aimed at showcasing the talents of NYU union members and employees.

Tarantal’s work can be seen in the first-floor windows of the Kimmel Center at 60 Washington Square South. Art is also exhibited in the Kimmel Center's Commuter Lounge Gallery on the 2^nd floor and Stovall Family Gallery on the 8^th floor.

.K. Velis Turan Accepted into NYS MARK Program

MARK is the New York Foundation for the Arts'(NYFA) new statewide six-month program for visual artists who want a unique opportunity for individualized focus on the professional side of their creative practice. MARK is designed to address the concerns of artists living outside of New York City while providing them with a new network statewide. Participating artists can expect MARK to spark goals and help to define concrete steps while providing individual and group feedback on how to better present yourself.

• What will the MARK Program include?
• - Focus on strategies for expanding your visibility as an artist.
• - Curriculum emphasizes goal setting and includes using the internet effectively, strengthening grant or project applications, improving writing and speaking about your work and identifying exhibition opportunities.
• - Between seminars, artists will be assigned projects related to their specific goals.
• - Individual feedback given to all participants.

Arle Sklar Weinstein

Arle has an upcoming exhibition/installation at Silvermine Guild Arts Center called “IN RELATION TO: An Art Adventure between Jody Silver and Arle-Sklar Weinstein”.

Dates: January 10 – February 19, 2010. Opening Reception January 10, 2-4 PM.

In addition, Sklar-Weinstein, in her role as the BLUE DOOR GALLERY Director, is issuing a call to women artists for an upcoming exhibition called “Women About Woman: A BROAD Introspective Retrospective,” scheduled to open on May 20, 2010. Conversations by Berenice Pliskin

Berenice Pliskin will be showing her silk painting “Conversation” in the exhibit "Interiors", a group show of area artists.

Introducing SDA Member Linda Van Alstyne

Linda, who has been an SDA member for four years, has been exploring the “endless possibilities of handmade felt” since 1994. Working with felt allows her to sculpt wearable masks and other artful objects. Prior to that she worked with on and off loom weaving, including basket weaving, natural dyeing and spinning.

The Pietroglyph series developed in response to a theme, “What’s out is IN” for the NEFG ‘08 exhibit season. Layered immersion dyeing using reverse stenciling creates the various images, which are then hand stitched together. Shibori dye techniques as well as surface stitching develop further textural contrast and interest.

Linda is the president of the Northeast Feltmakers Guild (NEFG). Linda exhibits her work with NEFG and by invitation to galleries throughout the United States. She also teaches in her home studio and upon request. She will be teaching the FUNdamentals of Feltmaking at Augusta Heritage Center at David Elkins College in the summer, 2010.

Linda is also a doctor of physical therapy who provides specialized treatment for individuals experiencing pelvic pain and dysfunction.

A-MAZE-ING HUNGERFORD OPEN STUDIOS DECEMBER 4-5

You're invited to visit Jeanne Beck's studio, #366 (third floor), during A-Maze-Ing Hungerford, a building wide open house and holiday sale.

Dates: Friday, December 4, 5-9 PM and Saturday, 10-5 PM

Location: Hungerford Building, 1115 East Main Street, Rochester, NY.

Enter door #2 or door #5 to get a map that will guide you through the building. Twenty-five artists will open their studios.

Jeanne will be selling original cards and matted works, along with special "Inspiration Packs", clear bags each filled with one pound of fat quarters and half yard pieces of dyed , painted and surface designed silks or cottons to inspire new creations-- or give to a fiber-loving friend! There will also be some bags of sheers and synthetics for sale for those who love glitz and shimmer!

While you stroll, you can listen to musicians playing on each floor and have a bite to eat at the Red Osier booth inside door #2. Play the A-Maze-Ing Hungerford Game (it’s a challenge to find your way through three floors in three buildings to the artists’ studios) and you can enter to win one of a number of door prizes.
